January 31, 2007

Today marks the 4 year anniversary of of the notorious Aqua Teen Hunger Force bomb hoax.

Dana and Ken talked about the hoopla on KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #25: Dana Loses

Here is the original description fromastecalledfred.com: [adult swim]’s Dana Snyder and Ken Plume’s weekly chat podcast returns, as Ken gloats - and gloats, and gloats, and gloats - about his winning of the Oscar pool, much to Dana’s chagrin. There’s also talk of “The Boston Event,” the Aqua Teen film, going legit, and much more…

It's a fun episode and worth another listen.

If you don't remember the details of the event, check out this clip:

Cheesy Bacon Oatmeal

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #169: Birthday-in-a-Biskit Dana speaks of a desire to eat bacon oatmeal.
He then mentions finding this
this site and the following recipe:

Cheesy Bacon Oatmeal

Ingredients
1/2 cup (40g) rolled oats
1/2 cup skim milk (or your favorite milk substitute)
1/2 cup water
pinch of salt
pinch of pepper
pinch of garlic powder
1 slice of reduced-fat bacon, chopped (save a few pieces for garnish)
1 oz reduced-fat sharp cheddar cheese
Directions
In a medium size pan, heat the oats, milk, water, and salt over medium heat. Once the mixture begins to simmer, approximately 5-6 minutes, stir in the chopped bacon, pepper, and garlic powder. Continue to stir until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 more minutes.

Then add the cheddar and give it a few more stirs to incorporate. You don’t want to stir too much because the mixture begins to get pretty sticky.

Pour into a serving bowl and top with bacon garnish.

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #169: Birthday-in-a-Biskit

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #169: Birthday-in-a-Biskit is up on asitecalledfred.com.

The show starts with talk of the Snydecast's 5th birthday. Then the show becomes a festival of crackers, Yakuza and Barney Miller.

The boys fight about the Drama Bookstore, food pockets and some kind of cheese from Club 33.

This is a solid episode befitting a five year birthday.

So grab your Chicken in a Biskit and push play for a journey that explains what Jay Edwards did with a chicken head and where Zach couldn't go because he had no pants.

Dana onstage TOMORROW in NYC

There was a post up on here a few days ago reporting an appearance by Dana at the Pit in NYC next week.

Well, no need to wait so long! Dana will be onstage tomorrow: Saturday, January 29th.

Dana will be performing a monologue for the group Big Black Car. One of the group's members is Ashley Ward. Ashley was a schoolmate of Mr. Snyder's and she is responsible for him getting the Aqua Teen Hunger Force gig.

This makes Ashley Ward one of the greatest human beings that ever lived! Seriously! Otherwise you would multitask to silence and not know who Tom Carvel is.

The show is The Baldwins & Big Black Car and it starts at 8pm.
The Peoples Improv Theater (The Pit) is located at 123 East 24th and is a great place to see comedy. Get your tickets NOW!

Charlie Callas 1924-2011

Legendary comic actor Charlie Callas has died at age 86. He was, perhaps, best known as the voice of Pete's Dragon.

Charlie Callas was briefly mentioned on Ken P. D. Snydecast #164: Every Day’s A Holly-Day and Ken and Dana have spoken multiple times about their interest in Pete's Dragon.

Please take a look at some of these clips of Charlie Callas in action:

quote timeline: KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #1: It begins

The very first episode of the Ken P. D. Snydecast seems to have been recorded on a night where Dana was working the drive thru at a Carl's Jr. and Plumey was stopping by to get a charbroiled burger...

...or maybe they both had really bad microphones.

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #1: Episode 1 seems rather quaint and charming today. The show is just over a half hour long and is really a fun listen.

Here are some of the more interesting quotes.

00:00 (Dana) Hello gang! This is Dana Snyder, the voice of Master Shake.

00:35 (Ken) This is Ken Plume for IGN Film Force.

00:46 (D) Our soon to be award winning podcast.

01:19 (K) Why can't we just be different?

01:25 (D) It's bad to be different, Ken.

02:37 (D) The point of making a bet is that you hurt if you lose.

03:16 (D)Are you sick or something?

03:58 (D) I swear you are the rudest guy I ever met in my life.

07:51 (D) We've gone from lame to nerdville.

09:39 (K) [sigh]

21:19 (K) You're making me sick, now.

28:12 (D) Don't soil the genre by mentioning the Care Bears.

30:36 (K) He's like Dear Abby - but Dana.

30:59 (K) [sigh]

32:10 (K) You took advantage of me.

32:59 (D) I gotta go to bed.

33:18 (K) Shut up! I hate you!

The Three Stooges in An Ache in Every Stake

The short had been mentioned by Ken on his Twitter page.

As a follow up, let me recommend An Ache in Every Stake where The Three Stooges carry a block of ice up a similar flight of stairs on a hot day.
I hope you love it:

Laurel & Hardy in The Music Box

Here is a recent tweet from Plumey:
Just watched Laurel & Hardy's "The Music Box" w/ my nephews. Happy to report that they loved it.

The Music Box is a Laurel and Hardy short film comedy released in 1932. It is perhaps the best (and best known) short the duo released. The film won the first Academy Award for Live Action Short Film (Comedy) in 1932.

I hope you all take a look at this classic. You will love it, too.

LOTS of Tokyo Disneyland talk including mention of the Tower of Terror that has no Twilight Zone:

Dana imagines he might fall asleep on the (now extinct) Tokyo Disneyland attraction Meet the World:

MEET THE WORLD PART 2
MEET THE WORLD PART 3

Dana talked a little about Tokyo Disney Sea. If you are only familiar with the stateside Disney parks, take a look at this amazing feat of Imagineering:

The Real Live Brady Bunch stage show was mentioned. The cast appeared on The Tonight Show in 1992 to promote the show:

Finally the ending of Back to the Future II was discussed. Sadly that video is not on youtube, but part of the end of part II is... the part where Doc's son POINTS AT HIS WANG:

Here we are at the start of 2011 and Game Show Network still has not picked up the game show 'Who's Your Whackadoo?'.

'Who's Your Whackadoo?' was concieved on KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #98: Timothy’s Circus of Crime.

Serial Killers results: The Whaler advances

Last night at the The Sacred Fools theater they held another night of their Serial Killers competition.

The Serial Killers competition is a unique showcase of serial (or ongoing) plays that compete with each other for a spot to continue next time.

Dana was onstage last night in THE WHALER Once again it was one of the shows that advanced. Was there ever any doubt?

CAPTAIN BATTLE AND
THE THIEF OF TOMORROW and ASK ELIZABETH also advanced.

The Snydecast universe was represented! A hardcore fan named Dennon (or Dennin sorry I am not sure) drove over 90 minutes to see the show. This also means 90 minutes BACK home late at night.

I am simutaneously jealous, impressed and sleepy just thinking about your night.

Dennon, post a comment letting us know what you thought of the show and the correct spelling of your name!

A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume - GUESTS: DC Pierson and Rebecca Watson

Over on asitecalledfred.com TWO new episodes of Ken Plume's "A Bit of a Chat" series have been added.

The first one is titled A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & DC Pierson.

DC Pierson is an author, actor an comic. He and Ken have a fun chat about Powerpoint, Ashton Kutcher and saturday morning cartoons.

Ken also talks a bit about his time on stage in Jacksonville, NC.

The second one is titled A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Rebecca Watson 2.

Ken's first words in the chat are "I'm sorry."

But after a rocky start it gears up to a rocking end. Rebecca is smart and funny and her and Ken keep the chat interesting for over an hour.

So head over to asitecalledfred.com and check out these two new sonic adventures.

a closer look: The Sherman Brothers

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #166: What’s New Wit You features a discussion of the Disney documentary The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story .

This documentary recently was released to DVD and cable TV. The documentary tells the story of the legendary Disney composers Robert and Richard Sherman who have written more motion-picture musical song scores than any other songwriting team in the history of cinema.

They wrote music for Mary Poppins, Sword in the Stone, The Jungle Book as well as non Disney films such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Snoopy Come Home.

The documentary focuses on the fact that the two brothers worked very closely together but were not close at all.

This episode was not the fist time The Sherman Brothers were mentioned on the Ken P. D. Snydecast.
On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #134: The Short One That Isn’t So Much Ken recommends listening to the "story meetings" between The Sherman Brothers and Mary Poppins writer P. L. Travers.

Ken describes the recordings as being "very fun" and describes P. L. Travers as "just crotchety and picky and just a horribly stuffy woman."

The story meetings are on youtube (audio only) and are a really interesting listen. Here is part 1:

You can find the other 4 parts (and the rest of that soundtrack) here.

Dana returns to the stage THIS SATURDAY!

This Saturday, January 22, Dana is on stage at The Sacred Fools theater in Los Angeles as part of the Serial Killers competition.

It's a competition where five serials are performed in one sitting.

After all five have ended the audience votes and the three plays with the highest vote totals continue on.

THE WHALER returns for episode #2!

THE WHALER
by Joe Jordan • directed by Jaime Robledo
They're on the high seas to hell.

Dana is back, this time in the role of Stumpy.

The Sacred Fools Theater is located at 660 N. Heliotrope Drive, just off Melrose.

Show starts at 11 p.m.

Tickets are only available at the box office and cost just $7.

a closer look: The conflict between The Sherman Brothers

Ken P.D. Snydecast #167: Doc Holidays features more talk of The Sherman Brothers documentary The Boys.

Dana has watched the movie and is let down by the lack of specifics on the split between the brothers.

The documentary is very light on details of the anger between the duo.

As Dana mentioned the film has one scene that starts to get specific. Robert was burned out and wanted to quit. Richard went to Robert's home to get some clothes for him. This was, somehow, misconstrued and a few days later Robert came home and things were never the same.

They described this as the 'last straw.'

Here is how the DVDMG.com review explained it:
We learn that Dick and Bob aren’t close, and we get a hint that this stemmed from an incident when Bob briefly left his wife, but that’s about all she wrote. We don’t get the level of psychological introspection to investigate the topic well, so we’re left to wonder what went wrong with the two.

In an interview here one of The Sherman Brothers' sons was asked to pin it down:

Did you ever find out what the rift was about?

Two guys with very different personalities, that’s it. There is something about those differences that make for bad relationships but great collaboration. They are able to come at things from many different angles.

Perhaps, like Dana and Ken said, we won't know until one of them passes away...

...or Dana tricks Richard with his prank call.

In the meantime, here are some great videos of The Sherman Brother:

The GE Carousel of Progress pitch reel- This wonderful video was made by Disney to pitch the idea of The Carousel of Progress attraction for the 1964 World's Fair. The clip starts with Walt and The Sherman Brothers at the piano playing the theme "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" watch for the GE logos on their backs. Afterwards Walt gives us a preview of the attraction which opened at the World's Fair and then moved to Disneyland and still runs today at Walt Disney World in Florida.
Take a look:

Here is Richard, the more extroverted member of the duo, performing "It's a Small World" in the tone and style that it was originally written:

5 Years of Snydecast - A look at Episode 1

According to the iTunes feed 1/12/2006 is the date of the first episode (not including the Holiday single that is listed as 1/1/1970 for some reason.) asitealledfred.com lists 1/26/2006 as the date of the very first episode.

Regardless, we have been blessed with five solid years of episodes (if you don't count 2007.)

On the very first Ken P. D. Snydecast the boys made a bet. Dana bets that the podcast will become an "award winning" podcast. Ken said no.
Ken wanted to bet a dollar, saying it was a 'gentlemen's bet' but Dana wanted a "ball's bet".

Dana: When I went to high school, Las Vegas High School in…uh…
Ken: Las Vegas?
Dana: Boise, Idaho. Our rival school was Rancho High School. The football game every year-
Ken: I thought it would be Reno High… go on.
Dana: You keep interrupting!
Ken: I'm sorry, go on.
Dana: You're the rudest guy I ever met in my life.
Ken: Fine. Go on, I'm listening now.
Dana: You keep talking! Do me a favor.
Ken: Finish your anecdote.
Dana: Do me a favor-
Ken: Tell me about your childhood.
Dana: Do me a favor-
Ken: I'm listening.
Dana: Keep the lip zipped.
Ken: Fine.
Dana: From now until I say unzip it.
Ken: Go.
Dana: You keep talking.
Ken: Go on!
Dana: You're talking again! Do me a favor, just don't talk.
Ken: Okay.
Dana: Now you're just playing around. Stop playing around. Get serious.
Ken: Well how will you know when I'm listening?
Dana: Just be quiet and let me finish this. I'm trying to talk, I'm trying to say something real important.
Ken: Fine, I'm listening.
Dana: Maybe you'll learn something and you won't try and make the same $1 bet eight friggin' times in a row. Can you do that?
Ken: Fine. Learn me. Go.
Dana: When I went to high school, Las Vegas High School our rivals was Rancho. And the big football game with the rival every year we had a bone game. This was a bone, a guy who went to Rancho High School… his dad was a butcher and they had a hambone. They decided this was the trophy that they were going to… ah… the winner of the football game was gonna get to have the bone at their school. Which was shortly after bronzed. Only after they boiled it, and then it broke a couple times and then they bronzed it a couple years later. So what I'm saying is we should find something like that, that you have since you're obviously gonna lose the first time. It can be something symbolic much like the Stanley cup or something like a trophy. At least that's something. And not a dollar. Unzip.
Ken: Oh, now I can talk.
Dana: That's right, that's why I said unzip.
Ken: So we need to find a hambone, is that what you're saying?
Dana: Oh my god!
Ken: I know, so we need to find a symbolic hambone.
Dana: That's right.

They ended up deciding on Ken's Elwood statue vs. Dana's Jester stick.

Dana won the Elwood statue by claiming he would give the Snydecast an award through eyeofthesnyder.com. Later on, the show did win an actual award, but for the time being Dana held the talisman.

The talisman was put up for grabs in Ken P. D. Snydecast Episode 4 in a bet regarding the weight of Paul Prudome vs John Popper. No winner was ever clearly determined and talisman was quietly retired after that.

A statue of Dana Snyder

A funny photo of Dana showed up on Andy Sipes' Twitter feed.

Andy tweeted "statue of @danasnyder" and linked to this:

a closer look: Ken's doctor visit

On Ken P.D. Snydecast #167: Doc Holidays Ken talked about a trip to the doctor where his ears were raped by a loud woman on her cell phone.
Ken mentioned he had tweeted about this adventure on twitter.com/KENPLUME.

Here are those tweets:

Early morning trip to the doctor. Thanks, person in waiting room, for sharing your cell phone call w/us. Loudly. Like our own Trigger Happy.

No, please, don't mind us, caller. We're thoroughly hooked on your drama now. How's your sister doing? Maw Maw still draining? Go on!

Call over? Waiting for another? Why not start singing? There you go!

Ah! Pop Idol's over. Another phone call. Why is Ricky such a deadbeat all the time? Why can't that boy just learn to work? TELL ME WHY!

You know, why not start reading an article from that magazine, over the phone. Your dad sure could use that cream - if only for his mouth!

Should we be taking notes on this grocery list of yours? Are we going to quizzed on your calls later? I don't want to screw up my GPGPA...

No, we're not looking at you, caller. Why would we be looking at you? But please, before you hang up, tell your sister we love her.

Oh, call's over? Awww... But wait! Your double thigh slap exclamation of, "I have GOT to go to the bathroom!" keeps the awkward streak alive

It's like we're all accompanying you on your bathroom journey, Miss Overshare. Glad to hear you singing in there, too!

Yes, what a friend we have in Jesus - and YOU, Miss Overshare. Now flush! Wash those hands, Miss O. Smother the Devil in Dial. Hallelujah!

Finally, I'm getting called back. Thank Jebus!

Thanks for putting her in the next room - The journey continues!

Miss Overshare is arguing with the nurse about politics. Seems he's "One of them!" in her eyes. Run, Mr. Nurse! She's not worth it!

Behind this wall lurks Miss Overshare...

Miss Overshare is arguing with the doctor. Now I know that the medicine he prescribed has given her "The hots".

"Three years and I'm all shakes and you've sent your kids to college on 'em!" Miss Overshare is not happy. What will the Doc do?

Ken Plume in 42nd Street

Here is a fantastic video that just popped up on youtube this week.

It features Ken Plume on stage at Jacksonville High School in North Carolina (on Henderson Road across from the Big Kmart.)

Ken describes the video as:

"A scene from the Jacksonville High School production of the musical 42nd Street, starring Ken Plume in the landmark, beloved, and altogether memorable role of "Sugar Daddy" Abner Dillon.

Notice the finely honed acting skills, reminiscent of the Three Stooges shorts of the 30's.

The uploading of this video should make Dana Snyder and countless Ken P.D. Snydecast fans happy."

Ken's powerful voice is unmistakable, he is seated (stage left) and delivers some dialogue (and gets some laughs) at 1:22.

There is another video from 42nd Street online here.

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #166: What’s New Wit You features Ken's tale of a visit to see Saturday Night Live on NBC's studio 8-H.

Ken was there to see an episode hosted Hilary Swank in February 2005. If you ever have a chance to catch a rerun listen closely and you may hear Ken laugh... or more likely, sigh.

Ken mentioned the former occupant of Studio 8-H, Arturo Toscanini. Toscanini was a famous conductor who became a household name when he began conducting the NBC symphony orchestra on radio.

Here is a picture of Toscanini waving his arms around:

Here he is about to beat a camera with a stick:

And here he is when he was a guest on the Ken P. D. Snydecast:

Toscanini died in the late 50s and the studio was later converted to be a space for TV broadcasts including Saturday Night Live.

a closer look: The Fish House in Key Largo

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #166: What’s New Wit You Ken mentioned the trip that he and Dana made to The Fish House in Key Largo.

Here is brief overview of the restaurant (and fish market) that was posted on youtube:

For over 25 years The Fish House has served the Key Largo area Florida's best seafood.

The eatery is known for their chowder and stone crab. The Fish House also has a raw bar which Dana once said was "...probably my favorite type of food and style of eating."

PHOTO: Dana rehearsing for The Producers

Here is a great 2010 photo from The Marshall Democrat News.
Dana is rehearsing a scene for a production of The Producers.

Dana will perform in Vero Beach, Florida in the Riverside Theatre production of The Producers next month.

The show will run from February 24 to March 20, 2011.

a closer look: John Williams beard and mustache

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #166: What’s New Wit You Dana said that legendary composer John Williams "has the weirdest beard and mustache that I've ever seen."

The facial hair critique kicked off a discussion of the new documentary The Boys: The Sherman Brother's Story.

However the facial fuzz was not mentioned again in this podcast.

John Williams is a movie composer perhaps best known for his work on Star Wars and E.T. The Extra Terrestrial.

Let's take a look at his beard and mustache:

Here is a recent shot:

Here is a side view:

Here's E.T. wearing John's beard:

And finally here's Darth Vader wearing the beard (and for good measure, a bowler hat):
