A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Jeri Ryan

Over on asitecalledfred.com a new episode of Ken Plume's "A Bit of a Chat" series has been added.

The episode is titled A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Jeri Ryan.

The chat starts off with talk of the Mortal Kombat web series Jeri is currently in.

The viral Mortal Kombat short that Jeri mentions is wonderful. If you haven't seen it take a look:

She also tells Ken about shooting the first 2 episodes of the Mortal Kombat series in Vancouver.

You can watch both of those on YouTube:

The other ass kicking scene that Jeri mentions was with The Rock on Star Trek: Voyager. It's pretty cool:

The conversation then switches from kicking ass to gardening (oddly it's a seamless transition.)

They talk of Jeri's garden and it's peanuts, tomatoes, purple carrots and four types of beets:

They talk of vegetables and they talk of Ortolan (the restauarnt Jeri and her husband owned) and the stuffed tomatoes her husband cooks for dinner.

They may look like this:

But they probably don't.

Finally, Jeri mentioned her favorite book, A Prayer for Owen Meany. You can buy the book here and read it.

Or, if you are lazy, there is a summary here.

Twitter: A Chump at Oxford

Last night Ken did one of his Twitter movie quizzes and ended the game with this tweet:

We are ashamed. All of us.

Luckily, the film is on YouTube... unfortunately it's a colorized version.

Still, the classic comedy shines through AND the colorizing technology is much better than it used to be.

Enjoy:

A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Mike Phirman 3

Over on asitecalledfred.com a new episode of Ken Plume's "A Bit of a Chat" series has been added.

The episode is titled A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Mike Phirman 3.

Here is the description:
"In this episode, I have another chat with one half of the musical comedy duo Hard ‘N Phirm - Mr. Mike Phirman - in a trainwreck of an episode they’ve dubbed WACKY TECHSCAPADE."

Its a weird episode that at one point Ken calls "infinity complicated." It starts off with the most entertaining technical difficulties ever. Then the discussion moves to various subjects like drinking songs, DVR ready commercials and opera.

At one point Phirm starts to apologize, but then realizes it's a free show. Ken then suggests we all donate to asitecalledfred.com so we can complain. It's a full proof scheme that will make him millions!

And then the hambone goes all the way.

Seriously, this is one of the most fun episodes of "A Bit of a Chat" ever. Go to asitecalledfred.com and check it out!

a closer look: Duckie

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #172: ButterBore the boys talked about Two and a Half Men and John Cryer.

On the episode Ken referred to Cryer as "Duckie" which confused Dana.

Ken then tries to recall which John Hughes film Duckie was in:

After determining which film Long Duk Dong was in (Sixteen Candles) Ken determined that Duckie was in Pretty in Pink.

I guess because there couldn't be TWO wacky duck named characters in one movie. Here is Long Duk Dong, BTW:

Anyway, Dana announced that he has never seen Pretty in Pink because it is a "lady movie".

On Episode 63 Dana explained his aversion to "lady movies". Take a look:

Dana: I love all movies except lady movies.
Ken: Now, what's your definition of lady movies?
Dana: You know, Thelma and Louise, A Room With A View, The English Patient uh… whatever that f***ing thing… The Women-The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Need I go on?
Ken: Yeah!
Dana: A movie that only appeals to ladies.
Ken: I want to see how many you can name, now.
Dana: What?
Ken: I want to see how many you can name, now.
Dana: That's all I'm gonna name because I can't think of any more.
Ken: What about, uh, When Harry Met Sally?
Dana: Uh… almost a lady movie. 'cept it has Billy Crystal in it who I assume is appealing to no woman… so…
Ken: …and Bruno Kirby.
Dana: Right.
Ken: and Carrie Fisher.
Dana: Yeah. Okay. Enough with the cast list!
Ken: I'm just sayin'.
Dana: Which… alright let's do this for a little bit. Lady movie, or not lady movie?
Ken: (laughs) Sleepless in Seattle
Dana: Definite lady movie. Although I have seen it.
Ken: Okay… Princess Bride.
Dana: Not a lady movie. On first sight you might think it's a lady movie but it's actually not. Because once again, Billy Crystal is in it.

Is Pretty In Pink a lady movie?

I will let you decide.

a closer look: Mustard

Back on KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #161: Mail Nag Dana talked about a listener (Jon from Jacksonville, Florida) who had given him the gift of mustard.

DANA: I do believe Jon, who knows who he is, who sent TWO things... one of which, Plumey... he spent $18.50 to have express mailed to Eye Of The Snyder International headquarters.

KEN: And you left it sitting in the mailbox for a few days?

DANA: NO! Well, yes. I haven't been in because of my birthday and all. But, and as fate will have it... now I don't know when it actually arrived... but... it was in fact... uh... listed... spent $18.50 Jonathan did. Have it sent there... and all it said was, just so I can be, since you said you didn't get anything yet... piece of paper just with the word "first" written on it.

KEN: That's what was in the package.

DANA: That's right. It was in an express mail envelope, $18.50, and Jonathan for you I am happy to say... it was indeed first.

The podcast goes on and then Dana mentions the other package Jon sent "a humongous box of various fancy mustards."

Dana mentioned that the mustard that looked the best had the seal broken (during shipping) and featured a red cap and a lion on the label.

That mustard was Lowensenf Extra Hot Mustard. The other mustard that had the broken seal was Alstertor Dusseldorf Mustard. Dana assumed that "Dusseldorf" must mean "crazy mustard" and liked the miniature beer stein it came in.

Jon was nice enough to send a picture of these condiments:

Lowensenf is on the left, Alstertor Dusseldorf on the right and a Pulaski Stone Ground Polish mustard in the middle.

Video: Expedition Everest

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #172: ButterBore features talk of Universal Studios. As they speak of the new Harry Potter attractions the subject of Disney and Expedition Everest comes up.

Everest has a giant animatronic Yeti that (according to Wiki) "has not been in full A-mode operation since a few months after the ride's opening. It currently only operates in B-mode and has a strobe light effect on it to give the appearance of movement. This is due to damage to its concrete base structure, which is unlikely to be repaired until a major refurb in the future."

Here is what the Yeti looks like in A-mode:

Here is the less scary B-mode:

And this is C-mode, which thankfully they have not had to use:

Here is a ride video (you see the yeti for a few frames at 3:13):

Here is a slow motion look at just the Yeti part of the video:

Finally, there is an excellent documentary online from Discovery Channel about the ride. Take a look:

a closer look: War Horse

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #172: ButterBore the boys talk about different NYC shows that Dana may be seeing in the future.

One of the shows Dana mentions in War Horse.

This show has been acclaimed for it's amazing horse puppets:

The show takes place during World War I and tells the story of a boy who's horse gets sold to the French Calvary and the boy's journey to get him back.

The story was based on a 1982 novel and is soon to be a film by Steven Spielberg.

This is a photo of Steven Spielberg:

Sexy man.

Anyway, here are some clips from the show:

It really looks amazing!

Sitcoms Plumey finds funny...

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #172: ButterBore features talk of sitcoms.

Dana asked Ken what shows he found funny. Ken mentioned:

30 Rock

Community

and Modern Family

Then he mentioned the Adult Swim show "Eagleheart" which led the boys to talk about that show for a bit.

Here are some promos for "Eagleheart":

Twitter: Dana as The Village People

This explains so much... yet creates so many new questions.

Sitcoms Dana finds funny...

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #172: ButterBore there is a lot of talk of sitcoms.

Dana was puzzled by the success of "Two and a Half Men".

To show a comparison, Dana mentioned some shows he found funny:

"The Golden Girls" was a show about old ladies. They had a mom and daughter old lady set, a horny old lady and Betty White:

"The Cosby Show", the classic sitcom featured Bill Cosby as the dad and Raven Simone as the family mascot.

It ran for many years:

Finally "The King of Queens" which Dana didn't give a full seal of approval to... but he said he has laughed at something on it.

Not too surprising. With a strong lead couple and a good supporting cast (including Jerry Stiller and Patton Oslwalt) the show was on the air for a long time:

a closer look: Butter Beer

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #172: ButterBore features tales of Butterbeer.

According to the Harry Potter Wiki Butterbeer is:
Butterbeer is a popular wizarding beverage described as tasting "a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch."
It has a very slight alcohol content, which could get house-elves fully drunk, but seemed to have a less pronounced effect on humans.
You can read more about it HERE.

Butterbeer is served at Universal Studios: Islands of Adventure theme park and that's where Plumey bought 4 glasses of it just for the mugs:

You can make your own Butterbeer at home!

THIS SITE features this recipe:
Homemade Butterbeer

Makes 6 servings

Ingredients

FOR THE BUTTERBEER
6 12-ounce bottles cream soda [I prefer IBC (which is vegan) or Polar Classics Vanilla, but any will work perfectly], substitute diet cream soda for a still yummy sugar-free version
3 teaspoons imitation butter, or clarified butter
OPTIONAL – 1 ounce light rum, per serving, for adults only

FOR THE FOAM
2 cups heavy cream
6 tablespoons sugar, or splenda for sugar free version
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 teaspoons imitation butter

To make the butterbeer: Set out 6 16-ounce glasses. Place 1/2 teaspoon of imitation butter in each glass. Pour 12 ounces of butterbeer into each glass. Lightly stir, if necessary.
To make the foam: In a large bowl, or the bowl of a standing mixer, whip the heavy cream on medium high speed for 3-4 minutes until it starts to thicken. Add the sugar and continue whipping until very soft peaks begin to form, another 3-4 minutes (if you need to whip more or less, then be sure to do so, the times can vary quite a bit based on environment). Stir in the vanilla and imitation butter, then whip for another 30 seconds or so, until soft peaks form.

Spoon a generous portion of foam on top of each glass of butterbeer, mixing gently, if desired (or spoon the foam into the bottom of the glass and pour the butterbeer over the top). Serve immediately.
