a closer look: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #110: This Man, This McNugget Dana talks about spending his honeymoon in the German town Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Here are some of the places he mentioned:

Dana says his hotel was Gasthof Greifen and across the way was a butcher shop where a wonderful little german fat lady who made Dana the best hamburger he ever had.

Dana mentioned the Museum of Torture:

Dana also talks about going to the puppet theater (or figure theater) in Rothenburg where he had to pee "so bad":

Here is a funny (and odd) video of a puppet production at that theater:

Finally Dana talks about the Nightwatchman's tour. Here is a youtube video of his tour:

Dana describes it as "the most picturesque little town" and agrees that it is like walking around Disney's Fantasyland.

To conclude here is a 30 second travelogue of Rothenburg in Korean:

Tweets from Mr. Plume's Twitter Feed

On twitter.com/KENPLUME Ken continues to display his trademark wit and humor:

Just spent 5 minutes of internal debate to determine that the word "portapotty" is infantile while the word "portajohn" is juvenile.

Whilst extracting a gray hair from my eyeline, I jabbed myself in the eye with my thumb. Dammit, IS THIS WHAT AGING BRINGS? And OW.

No one this side of a flaming oil drum should be singing Big Rock Candy Mountain in the middle of the night. I seem to be the sad exception.

If I had 1 wish, I'd wish for the ability to sing. If I had 2 wishes, the 2nd would be to play piano. 3 wishes? Something about orphans.

a closer look: The Cabazon Dinosaurs

In the 2009 episode KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #86: Anniversa-wee Dana tells Ken of his trip to see the Cabazon Dinosaurs.

The Cabazon Dinosaurs were built by a man named Claude Bell over the course of the 1960s to 1980s.

The two giant dinosaurs were built to attract business to The Wheel Inn restaurant (that Dana also mentioned.)

The iconic dinosaurs have been used in TV and movies, most notably in Pee Wee's Big Adventure and The Wizard.

Today, as Dana mentioned, the dinosaurs are part of a creationist museum.

a closer look: Fast food ashtrays

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #144: Guess Who Two Ken and Dana have the following exchange:

Dana: You go to, like Burger King or Taco Bell and they would have these little pressed, almost like aluminum foil but really thick, pressed...
Ken: The ashtrays? Oh yeah with the logo on 'em.
Dana: Yeah.
Ken: Yeah.
Dana: Which obviously they don't have anymore.
Ken: They used to be fun to muck around with while you were waiting.
Dana: 'cause you'd, like, take 'em.
Ken: Or it was like air hockey! Those things would really fly across a laminated table.
Dana: They were great.
Ken: I bet they don't even make those anymore.

I don't know if they still make the ash trays, but they are certainly getting harder to find. Last year McDonalds started moving to make their Japanese restaurants non-smoking just like the U.S. counterparts.

In the U.S., smoking is banned at indoor restaurants in all but 11 states. McDonalds has a self imposed ban on smoking. Perhaps it's because they figure if they can't have healthy food at least they have healthy air.

Or maybe the cost of replacing the ash trays Dana stole was too high.

a closer look: Michael Jordan's Twitter Account

Flipping through the iTunes reviews of the Ken P. D. Snydecast I found this, rather interesting, review:

#143 *****
by a part of him - Apr 19,2010

Love the podcast guys! Keep it up. It really is funny and a good listen that doesn't go over an hour. You'll enjoy it if you like random humor. However podcast #143 was painful... The rest is fantastic!

A quick look at the archives reveals that episode to be KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #143: Guess Who and KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #144: Guess Who Two were the two episodes that Ken spent playing 20+ questions with Dana regarding Michael Jordan's Twitter account.

If you haven't heard this episode [SPOILER WARNING] in the episode Dana was looking at Michael Jordan's Twitter page and noticed the four people he was following:

Oprah, Shaq, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and film director David Lynch.

David Lynch was such an unusual choice that Dana spent over 30 minutes making Ken guess

and guess

and guess.

I wouldn't call it painful, though. Ken's despair and Dana's insistence on his continuing with the guessing game makes it a very fun listen.

If you were listening to the episodes at the time (April 2010) and didn't look up Michael Jordan's Twitter page it was a fun game to guess along with.

If you look up Micheal Jordan's Twitter page today you won't find it... at least the one Dana was reading from.

That account turned out to be a FAKE. It was full of posts that seemed slightly off the wall - but not enough to be sure it was a parody.

The account was eventually suspended by Twitter, but not before it put out dozens of marvelously weird tweets.

Take a look:

a second listen KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #133: The Things We Do

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #133: The Things We Do is one of the shortest episodes clocking in at about 20 minutes.

Dana was on location and sounded like he was on the other end of a drive in movie speaker.

Still, lack of audio quality is trumped by an excess of entertainment quality.

Dana is driving to the Annie Awards and at the start of the podcast is a bit lost.

Dana talks about the movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus which results in Ken paying him a dollar. You will have to listen to know why.

The boys then talk about where they like to sit in a movie theater then spin into discussions about other films they had seen recently.

The podcast also features talk of the Arclight Cinerama Dome:

The Dome is one of the most famous theaters in Hollywood.

The show ends with another dollar bet. Ken bets that after the awards show Dana will end with in a hot tub with William Shatner and Tom Kenny.

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #133: The Things We Do is a great episode. Give it another listen!

a closer look: Retro wallpaper

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #141: Marathon Men Dana tells a story about "super awesome vintage" wallpaper that he had put up in his old NYC apartment.

Dana and Ken also speak of how you rarely see wallpaper in homes anymore, but it used to be everywhere.

Sadly a generation has grown up without ever seeing this:

or this:

or this:

Dana also talked about the difficulty of hanging wallpaper before self-adhesive wallpaper was introduced.

To hang the older style wallpaper you would need to mix the wallpaper paste, cut the paper and then hang the sheets.

It was a time consuming and tedious job.

This makes it all the more baffling, as Ken noted, that anyone ever hired these guys:

a closer look: The Atlanta Cyclorama

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #39: Bizzaro-Cast the boys talk ofThe Atlanta Cyclorama which Dana calls "the world's most bizzare tourist attraction" and says "It tells the story of the Civil War and the burning of Atlanta in full 360 degree…uh... something. I don't know really what."

Nobody does.

However, the attraction's website describes the Cyclorama as follows:
The Cyclorama of the Battle of Atlanta is the world's largest oil painting, painted in 1885-86 by artists from Germany. It has been shown in Grant Park since 1893.
The three-dimensional foreground, called a diorama, was added in 1936, bringing a depth of 30 feet to the display.

Here is a great photo from this site:

This a great photo of Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh touring the exhibit in 1939:

Finally, this is a unique news clip that shows how volunteers care for "the world's most bizzare tourist attraction":

From Plumey's Twitter...

On twitter.com/KENPLUME Ken has returned home and is tweeting with a vengeance.

He is asking all of us to go here and DONATE.

He also told us about an interesting piece of mail he recieved:

a closer look: Musso and Franks

One of the most mentioned topics of The Ken P. D. Snydecast is the time Ken and Dana dined at Musso and Frank Grill in Hollywood, California.

Musso and Frank is the oldest restaurant in Hollywood and is located on the Walk of Fame (where the sidewalk has stars with celebrities names on it.)

Musso and Frank opened in 1919 under the name Frank's Cafe and soon became a legendary dining spot for writers, actors and Ken & Dana.

Dana is fond of Musso and Frank but Ken was not pleased with the restaurant.

The menu (which has changed little over the years) is frequently mocked by Ken... especially the stuffed celery.

Ken has also mentioned how "elderly" the staff was.

It is true, you won't find any waiters here that are working your way through college.

You can read the restaurant's menu online by clicking here.

If you are in the Hollywood area I suggest you stop by. Try the diplomat pudding... and tell 'em Plumey sent you!

a closer look: Coca-Cola Black Cherry Vanilla

On the 2006KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #5: Bed Buggin' Dana was bemused that Ken was drinking a Black Cherry Vanilla Coca-Cola.

Ken: I'm drinking a straight up Coke Black Cherry Vanilla.
Dana: Jesus Christ!
Ken: What?
Dana: That's the most complicated flavor I've heard of in my life.

Coca-Cola Black Cherry Vanilla and Diet Coke Black Cherry Vanilla were varieties of Coca-Cola that were launched in January 2006 just one month before Ken sipped one during the Snydecast.

Coca-Cola Black Cherry Vanilla was available in 20-ounce, 2-liter, and 12-pack can forms.
Coca-Cola Black Cherry Vanilla was intended to replace Vanilla Coke. However low sales figures prompted the return of Vanilla Coke (now Coca-Cola Vanilla) in the summer of 2007.

Coca-Cola Black Cherry Vanilla ceased production at that time.

a second listen: KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #137: Rough ‘n’ Reddy

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #137: Rough ‘n’ Reddy features a strong contender for the greatest debate in the history of mankind:

Would Dana have sex with Helen Reddy?

Helen Reddy is a singer best known for her feminist anthem "I Am Woman".

She used to look like this:

Now she looks like this:

Before:

After:

The conversation then spirals downward into a discussion about Dana humping a dirty old homeless guy for one hundred million bucks.

Dana: One hundred million dollars! I'm tellin' ya!
Ken: Would you like that paid out in a lump sum?
Dana: Yeah. Just like I had to take it. I want a lump sum.
Ken: So what, do you want him to hand the cash over as he's doing it?
Dana: Well yeah. You know, you gotta have a lawyer and all that stuff who verifies the funds. I want the Swiss bank account as soon as that money goes in to the bank account-
Ken: You drop your pants.
Dana: That's right. Showtime.
Ken: (impersonating Dana) Have at it!
Dana: I will just refer to it as showtime. We'd have rules though too, like, there's a time limit. I mean, it's not gonna be just like some crazy homeless 72 hour screwfest for this guy.

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #137: Rough ‘n’ Reddy is a HYSTERICAL episode and is funnier each time I hear it.

You should give it a second listen... just try not to get too many mental images that you can't un-think.

The Producers review in Florida Today

A listener named Casey tipped me off to a wonerful review of Dana's current show, The Producers.

The review (by Pam Harbaugh with photo by Rob Downey) can be found at the Florida Today website.

Of Dana, the article says:

As out of luck Broadway producer Max Bialystock, Dana Snyder hits the right blend between scoundrelous and likeable. We can almost see the bell ring in his head when his character hears his accountant joke that he could make millions by intentionally producing a flop. He finds "Springtime for Hitler," a musical romp through the third Reich. "Touch it, feel it, smell it" he tells accountant Leo Bloom, who signs on to help Bialystock in his criminal but comic pursuit.
