Wagons East!

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #187: Doppler-Ween features talk of a dopey John Candy, Richard Lewis film Wagons East!

The movie was the film John Candy was making when he died.

It's not an awful film, but its not a good one either. You pretty much get John Candy being disgustingly awesome as a sleazy wagon master and Richard Lewis as Woody Allen without the comic timing.

It's so-so.

Rather than watch it, watch this fun "on the set" clip:

Stepin Fetchit

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #186: Halloweenies, Ken and Dana talk about Bojangles Chicken and Biscuits and the conversation included a brief mention of actor Stepin Fetchit.

Stepin Fetchit was the stage name of actor Lincoln Perry. Perry began acting in films in the 1920s and in 1925 received an acting credit for the film The Mysterious Stranger.
This was the first time a black actor had ever received a screen credit.

Fetchit went on to appear in dozens of films in the 1920 to the 1950s. His characters often highlighted negative stereotypes of African-American and can seem shockingly offensive today.

However, it's fair to say that Perry opened the door for future black actors to appear on film in less offensive roles.

In 1976 the Hollywood chapter of the NAACP awarded him a Special NAACP Image Award. In 1978, Perry was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
If you have never seen him perform, do yourself a favor and check out this feature film on YouTube:

It's Judge Priest, a 1934 film starring Will Rogers with a featured supporting role by Stepin Fetchit.

Farm Basket

Farm Basket is a chicken and turkey restaurant located at:
6148 W. Charleston
Las Vegas, NV

Farm Basket has been open for over 34 years and claims to be "the first chicken company in the nation to provide drive-thru service" in 1973.

The menu features "Cluck e' tos" (tacos), GREAT GOBBLER (turkey breast sandwich) and Farm Fries (fries smothered in homemade gravy and topped with cheese.)

Dana Snyder in Brevard Live Magazine

Nice picture of Dana in the November 2012  Brevard Live Magazine.
The photo is part of an article about the 2012 Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival. You can read it below, or here.

Fried Potatoes

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #186: Halloweenies the boys discuss fried potatoes.

Once again, Ken expresses his disdain for the fries at In N Out burger.

Dana asks Ken if he ever had Belgian Fries.
Ken asks if that's the same as waffle fries:

The website The Secret History of French Fries writes about Belgian Fries:

The Dutch, however, cannot take responsibility for inventing the fry. Neither can the French. That honor goes to the Belgians, where fries are cherished even more than they are in Holland. The fry culture in Belgium is similar to that of Holland—fries are everywhere, the thick slabs of potatoes are freshly fried and served in paper cones, and they are offered with a variety of toppings, the most popular being mayonnaise—but the Belgians have also developed a wide variety of specialized fries shops, called, in Belgium "frietkots" or "fritures". These range from small stands, to sheds, busses and caravans, to shacks or quaint chalets.

Meanwhile, Ken describes the hash browns at Bojangles. They call them Bo-Tato rounds.

For real.

Tang

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #186: Halloweenies features talk of Tang!

Ken says it tastes like "chilled bile".

Tang is a fruit-flavored drink.

Originally formulated by General Foods Corporation food scientist William A. Mitchell in 1957, NASA used it on John Glenn's Mercury flight, and subsequent Gemini missions.

The creator of Tang, William A. Mitchell, also invented Pop Rocks, Cool Whip and a form of instant-set Jell-O.

We can now put it in the Snydecast "pantry cabinet" alongside our Chicken in a Biskit, Miller Lite and our Chocodilles.

The Hot Dog on a Stick Girl

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #186: Halloweenies features MORE talk about this Hot Dog on a Stick girl.

You may remember she was mentioned in Ken P. D. Snydecast #165 - Not a Creature Was Stirring features the following exchange:

Ken: We went to the mall.
Dana: Why did we go there?
Ken: For Hot Dog on a Stick. And then you wanted to stop by Sears...
Dana: ... where you fell in love with the hot dog girl!
Ken: She was cute!
Dana: Listen. no arguments from me.
Ken: And she was flirting with me.
Dana: Uh-
Ken: Shut up!
Dana: She was very cute.
Ken: She was.
Dana: The girls there are very cute. They're sweet, cute, little California girls... but she was a child. She was probably 18 years old.
Ken: Legal.
Dana: Ugh. Creepy uncle Ken's back, everybody!

Ken mentions a picture that was taken with the hottie in question. Sadly, like the picture of Tommy Glasscock as Oliver Hardy, it appears to have been swept off the internet at some point.

Can you find it? Let me know!

Cow Tales!

Remember the talk of Cow Tales on KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #186: Halloweenies? Well, they are still around and made the rounds this Halloween:
Yep. The sickeningly sweet confectionery is haunting trick or treat baskets for another year.
Yum.

Bojangles

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #186: Halloweenies features talk of Bojangles Sweet Tea.

Dana mentions the chain's logo:
He wonders if it ever had a tap dancer on the logo. The chain opened in 1977. I found this logo, but I don't think it's for the same restaurant:

Also, there is debate as to whether Ken and Brian Fitzpatrick went to Bojangles or Chick Fil A on a traveling Snydecast during Dragon*Con 2008.

It was Chick Fil A.

I talked to Brian about that show over the summer:

Updated! From 2010:
Irishman Aaron Poole is force fed a variety of American delicacies during the 2010 Red Nose Net excursion in Atlanta, Georgia. Ken Plume and Widgett Walls are there to hold his hand and laugh in his face.

As Aaron Poole says in the comments "I also took a trip to Bojangles with Ken. We filmed my first ever visit"

Dana's dogs

On the latest Ken PD Snydecast, Dana chastises his dog Rose (Rosie) for making licking her cone/collar/thingie.

Dana mentions that Rosie has a problem of obsessively licking a spot again and again.

In addition to Rosie, Dana has a male dog named Argos. He also likes to lick:

Dana occasionally tweets/instagrams pics of his dogs.

Dana also mentions that the last major woodworking project he did was these steps for his dogs:
