KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #186: Halloweenies is out, and it's full of tricks and treats.

It's full of tales of candies of Halloween's past, Chick Fil A, and cheese on a stick!

Go listen to KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #186: Halloweenies!

Need more? Here are some from the past:

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #158: Mo Better Blues:

Ken & Dana return with an enemies list, make a brand new friend, and talk costumes and candy.

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #19: All Hallow’s Grimace:
Dana Snyder and Ken Plume’s weekly chat podcast returns with Halloween preparations, McDonald’s cuisine, and that same ol’ loveable banter.

Also on KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #118: It’s A Gas the boys talk about Muppet Halloween costumes. I have made a video of their chat (with photos of the items in question):

Ken mentions how funny he found Mel's Hitler Rap:

The conversation then spirals into chat about rapping, particularly by white comics.

Rappin' Rodney is mentioned:

And for good measure, here's Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd:

The 1959 Disneyland Expansion

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #185: Semi-Elect Ken and Dana talk about Disney trivia. One of the question involves the opening of the Matterhorn.

On his third guess, Dana mentions that it opened in 1959. He also mentioned that it was a big year for Disneyland and three big attractions opened.

Indeed it was! On June 14, 1959 The Matterhorn Bobsleds, The Monorail and The Submarine Voyage Through Liquid Space all opened at Disneyland.

And yeah, the Matterhorn was the first "fast ride" at Disneyland.

Before that they had 4 slow years. Slooooooow.

June 14, 1959 was recorded and released to theaters in a newsreel format under the title Gala Day at Disneyland:

You can watch the special on YouTube:

Cook E. Jarr

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #185: Semi-Elect features a listener question about what to do in Las Vegas. Dana mentions a few different things.

He mentions Musashi Japanese Steak House (3900 Paradise Rd  Las Vegas, NV 89169 • 702-735-4744), he mentions Popavich (the crazy cat man) and he mentions Cook E. Jar.

According to Las Vegas Leisure Guide:

Cook E. Jarr has been a lounge fixture on the Las Vegas scene since he came here in the early 80's and decided to make it his home. Always fresh as a singer and entertainer Jarr has a unique, anything goes, style all his own, combining music as diverse as 60's Classics, disco, country and even todays hip-hop hits with his own trademark sound effects, puns, antics and special effects, punctuated with his tales of "old" Vegas. Las Vegas is pretty much the only place one could expect to find someone as... "Vegas Baby" as Cook E. Jarr.

Cook E. Jarr creates one of the best parties with the best music in town. If you don't find yourself uncontrollably jumping up to dance, just sit back and enjoy, but don't miss what many people come to Las Vegas expecting to see, because he delivers.

Jubilee!

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #185: Semi-Elect Dana mentions the Las Vegas spectacular Jubilee!

From wiki:
Jubilee! is a long-running Las Vegas Strip-based burlesque show. It opened in August 1981 and was originally produced by Donn Arden. As of 2006, this resident show at Bally's Las Vegas is the longest-running production show in Las Vegas. The Jubilee! showgirls are an icon of old Vegas. The show uses costumes designed by Bob Mackie and Pete Menefee. UNLV Special Collections houses many of the original costume design drawings which can be accessed online through the Showgirls collection from UNLV Digital Collections. Many of the show's sets date back to the original production and include the sinking of the Titanic. Jubilee!'s principal dancer from the opening night until her departure 23 years later was Linda Green; this record is still hailed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Here's a picture of me with some Las Vegas showgirls many years ago:
I was wearing a Disneyland sweatshirt and posing with showgirls. Yeah, I was livin' the Snydecast life even then, 3 years before the show started.

Here is a great 4 minute video celebrating the 30th anniversary of Jubilee!:

Dana mentions the Jubilee! Titanic number. Here is a look at that part of the show:

Election Day!

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #185: Semi-Elect Ken mentions that he voted early. Dana said he waits for Election Day... the he said he thought it was November 18th.

It was no surprise to me that Dana thought this was the day we chose the leader of the free world.

After all, November 18th is the day we salute a character that is iconic and American.

November 18th is when we celebrate Mickey Mouse's birthday!
Steamboat Willie was first released on November 18, 1928 in New York

Ducks marching down Main Street USA

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #185: Semi-Elect features Dana telling the story of live ducks parading down Main Street USA in Disneyland to celebrate Donald Duck's birthday.

According to Disney Dispatch:

Fifty live ducks were used in one of Donald's birthday parades, but I don't know how they were used. One report claims they marched down Main Street, U.S.A. wearing party hats. Other reports claim they road on a parade float. I've only been able to find a single image of the ducks.

Did any of you see this parade in person? I'd love to know whether the ducks performed daily in the parks, or whether they were just used in the broadcast of the parade seen on CBS.

Here is video of the parade from the CBS broadcast:

Slightly related, here is a picture from carlbarksart.com with a picture of Disney Legend (and one of Ken's favorite artists) Carl Barks:

The caption reads:
Carl Barks with Donald Duck and hundreds of live ducks after waling with them in a parade at Disneyland Paris.

Stupid Owls

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #185: Semi-Elect Dana mentions seeing a majestic owl landing on a power line behind his house.

Ken then mentions how stupid owls are.

As I researched this I found the following information:

You probably have heard the phrase “wise old owl” before, so you might be surprised to learn that these birds aren't the most intelligent. Their brains are actually considered quite small for their comparative size, and geese, crows, and ravens are all thought to be “smarter.” So why are owls considered so wise?

In ancient Greece, owls were associated with Athena, the goddess of wisdom. She was thought to be accompanied by one at all times, and owls eventually gained their own reputation based on their connection with the goddess — a myth that continues to this day.

There is also the common belief that owls simply "look" smart! Unlike most birds, owl eyes are placed on the front of their heads (versus on the sides) to help them focus on prey when hunting. This wide-eyed glance gives them the impression of thinking really hard when, in reality, they are most likely just thinking about their next meal!

I don't remember where I found it, so I will pretend I wrote it. Human 1, Owl 0.

Here's a picture of an owl's brain:

Not sure what the "wulst" the "V" and the "OB" are. Perhaps that's the most juicy and delicious parts of the owl brain. Damn, that looks delicious. I just wanna dunk it into some cocktail sauce.

Maybe I'm just hungry. When is lunch?

Well, say what you will about owls, at least they can find the center of a Tootsie Pop:

Young Frankenstein's Cleavage

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #184: The Giving Free Ken and Dana debate the amount of boobs in Young Frankenstein!

It's a debate for the ages... and possibly ALL ages. Actually, that's a different debate.

Roger Bart

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #184: The Giving Free Dana and Ken mention Roger Bart.

Born in Connecticut, Roger Bart grew up in New Jersey.

In 1987 he made his Broadway debut in Big River. He is a celebrated stage actor who earned Drama Desk and Tony nominations for his performance as Leo Bloom in The Producers.

On television, Bart was on The George Carlin Show (1994) where he played George Carlin's son. He also had a SAG award winning performance on Desperate Housewives.

On the Disney front, Bart provided the singing voice for Hercules and the singing voice of Scamp in Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure.

Bart also originated the lead role of Dr. Frederick Frankenstein in the musical adaptation of Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, which opened on Broadway in November 2007

FYI, 2007 was not 15 years ago AND came AFTER 2003.

Is there a celebrity that listens to the Snydecast?

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #184: The Giving Free Dana wonders aloud "do you think there is a celebrity out there that listens to these Snydecasts?"

It makes me wonder, is there? Does former President Jimmy Carter still listen?

What about Keenan and or Kel?
How about the un-doable Helen Reddy?
Perhaps as crazy eyed Danny Devito looked at his webcam, Dana and Ken were blaring away on his iTunes:
Or the ghost of Phil Silvers! Maybe he listens:

Who knows? Are you a celebrity? Let us know!

Muhammad Ali

On Ken P. D. Snydecast #183: Your Area And You Ken and Dana talk about Muhammad Ali. But they talk about how sick he is, and that makes me sad.

I prefer to think of Ali as a great fighter who lent his likeness to some silly stuff.

There was an action figure:

A video game:

He tried to sing:
 Listen to it HERE

He fought Superman:

Then sang again:
 Listen to it HERE

Sadly we never got a one on one fight between him and Mr. Tooth Decay:

Time Traveler

On Ken P. D. Snydecast #183: Your Area And You Dana mentions the Time Traveler app from Yahoo.
The app was released this summer and is pretty ingenious! It helps you find things to do when you are in a city or on a road-trip.

Let's say you are in Los Angeles and have a dinner reservation at Downtown Disney in Anaheim in 5 hours.

Punch in your destination and tell it how long you have to spare and based on those times it will find stuff along your route:

Or stuff in Boston. Maybe I broke it.
