Cinerama was a unique film process that used three projectors and three screens to project a super wide image.
If you have been to Epcot, think of the Circlevision films in China and Canada - but remove six of those screens. And then make the images merge seamlessly.

This Is Cinerama was designed to show off the format. It is a documentary that features footage of a roller coaster, water skiing and a choir in a beautiful cathedral.
The film occasionally shows at Dana's favorite theater, the Arclight Cinerama Dome.
As the theater's name implies the theater was built to specialize in these films.
Despite the huge success of This is Cinerama (it was one of the highest grossing films of 1952) the format did not take off and only a handful of films were made in Cinerama.
The most notable film in the 3-strip format was How The West Was Won and the DVD of that film features a nice Cinerama print that you can watch at home along with info about the format.
