Universal Studios Butterbeer and Pumpkin Juice

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #203: Trek-a-doodle Ken and Dana talk about Universal Studios Pumpkin Juice and Butterbeer.

The Harry Potter wiki says:
Butterbeer is a popular wizarding beverage described as tasting "a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch."

Butterbeer is served cold in bottles and hot in "foaming tankards".In Hogsmeade, it's sold at The Three Broomsticks and The Hog's Head, although the fact that the latter pub's stock was described as "very dusty" suggests that it was not sold there very often. In Diagon Alley, the drink has been known to be sold at the Leaky Cauldron.
At the Hog's Head, customers are charged two sickles per Butterbeer (£0.60 approximately), but it is not certain whether this is a universal price for the drink, or if the price of the drink varies from location to location.

Pumpkin juice is a beverage made from pumpkins. Manufactured since 1837 by London Pumpkins & Sons, it is extremely popular in the wizarding world, particularly among the students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is drunk at any occasion, such as breakfast, lunch, at feasts or on other occasions. It seems to have taken on the same role that orange juice has in the Muggle world, though orange juice is sometimes consumed in the wizarding world as well.
Pumpkin juice is readily available, and can be purchased on the Hogwarts Express. Severus Snape threatened Harry in his fourth year that he might slip Veritaserum in his evening pumpkin juice while believing that Harry stole his potion ingredients. Dolores Umbridge offered Harry Potter pumpkin juice in 1996 when she wanted to secretly administer Veritaserum to him, but he chose tea instead. Prior to a Quidditch match in his sixth year, Ron Weasley believed that Harry had slipped Felix Felicis into his morning juice to help him play perfectly.

In the podcast Ken says "pumpkins don't go bad" to which Dana replies "haven't you ever seen one a week after Halloween?"
The label does indicate it needs to be refrigerated, but only after opening.

Teenager killed in remote-control helicopter accident

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #203: Trek-a-doodle Dana mentions the horrible accident where a man was partially decapitated by an RC helicopter.

Here are some details from The NY Post:

A Queens teenager’s obsession with high-powered model helicopters ended in gruesome death yesterday, when one of his beloved toy whirlybirds spun out of control in a Brooklyn park and scalped him, sources said.
Roman Pirozek, 19, — a chopper aficionado who bragged about his exploits on YouTube — was piloting the small machine at Calvert Vaux Park in Gravesend at around 3:40 p.m., when something went horribly wrong, cops said.
The toy aircraft turned toward the teen as he tried to pull off an unusual stunt. It hit him at high speed with the rotors spinning into his head and taking out “good chunk,” law enforcement sources said.
A handful of his friends watched in horror.

Read more here.

The high-end RC helicopter has a blade span of 62 inches, with a rotor that spins at more than 2,000rpm. It weighs a little over six pounds.

Jammie Dodgers

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #202: Too Hot To Tot Ken and Dana talk about Jammie Dodgers.

It's a popular cookie in the UK.

According to Wikipedia:
The biscuit has been mentioned several times in the British science fiction programme Doctor Who. Lead actor Matt Smith has described Jammie Dodgers as "The Eleventh Doctor's favourite snack".[citation needed] Most prominently, in the episode "Victory of the Daleks" (2010), The Doctor attempts to pass one off as a remote self-destruct button for his TARDIS. He also mentioned that he required a dozen Jammie Dodgers in his list of items needed to retrieve the child calling the president in the episode The Impossible Astronaut. In the episode The Bells of Saint John, he leaves a plate of Jammie Dodgers for his new companion.

Ken tweeted a photo of the bag:

Mayor Goldie Wilson

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #202: Too Hot To Tot Dana mentions that the interview he was doing with me was cut short because of an interview I had scheduled with Donald Fullilove.

Donald played Goldie Wilson in the first Back to the Future film. Goldie was a 1955 soda jerk who would become the mayor in 1985.

Donald also played Goldie Wilson III in the sequel Back to the Future part II.

Among Donald's other credits are Michael Jackson in The Jackson 5 cartoon and voice appearances in Up and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

imitation calamari

On Ken's 24 hour marathon of Chats in April he and Dana talked about imitation calamari made of pig rectum.

Dana talks about a 'This American Life' investigation. You can hear that here.

The Huffington Post also covered it:

'Imitation Calamari' Investigated By 'This American Life,' Suggested To Have Dubious, Pork-Based Origin

Plenty of foods come surrounded by urban legends. Hot dogs and genetically-modified organisms, for instance, come with a cadre of rumors -- some true, some patently false. But if a recent segment on "This American Life" is to be believed, it may be time to add calamari to the list.

The popular radio show's Jan. 11 episode focuses on doppelgangers -- people and things that appear extremely similar on the surface but are actually totally different.

Among the doppelgangers? Calamari's modest cousin, "imitation calamari."

Though it has a shape and texture similar to the real thing, its component parts are decidedly different. While calamari comes from squid, the replica is supposedly made of hog rectum, otherwise known as "bung."

The irony is not lost on Ben Calhoun, one of the show's producers, and ring-leader of the segment, who notes:

In restaurants everywhere, right this second, people are squeezing lemon wedges over crispy, golden, rings, dipping the rings into marinara sauce, and they're eating hog rectum. Now they're chewing -- satisfied and deeply clueless. It's payback for our blissful ignorance about where our food comes from and how it gets to us.
