Back to the Future: The Ride

On Ken PD Snydecast 181: Caviar Bucket, Ken mentions his love of  Back to the Future: The Ride at Universal Studios.

If you haven't seen it before, watch the clip below. If you have seen it, still watch the clip. It's the full experience. It's awesome.

Yom Kippur

On Ken PD Snydecast 181: Caviar Bucket, Dana and Ken talk about Yom Kippur.

Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year for the Jewish people.

The holy day is observed with a 25-hour period of prayer and fasting. Many Jewish people will spend much of the day in synagogue services.

This sign could be used to warn people not to eat because it is close to Yom Kippur.

You can't eat kippers on Yom Kippur:

Yom Kippur said backwards sounds like "muy rupick" which is Spanish for "lots of rupick." It is unknown what a "rupick" is.

Here is an actual Yom Kippur card:

James Dean wouldn't have to atone. He's not Jewish... or breathing.

All foolishness aside, I wish all who keep holy the day of Yom Kippur the very best.

Gmar Chatimah Tovah!

The Great Muppet Movie Ride & The Yeti

On Ken PD Snydecast 181: Caviar Bucket, Dana and Ken talk about The Great Muppet Movie Ride concept.

This was a ride that was envisioned for the Muppet area of Disney MGM Studios (now Disney's Hollywood Studio.)

Here is a short clip where Jim Henson describes the attraction as"it'll be a backstage ride, explaining how the movies are shot... but everything is wrong."

That's pretty much all the info in the clip. But, if you want to hear the words out of his mouth, watch it:

Here is some production art from the proposed attraction:

The attraction was discarded when Jim Henson's death made the future of The Muppets less certain.

Ken and Dana mention other examples of things that could be better about Walt Disney World, Including the Yeti in Expedition Everest which (according to Wiki) "has not been in full A-mode operation since a few months after the ride's opening. It currently only operates in B-mode and has a strobe light effect on it to give the appearance of movement. This is due to damage to its concrete base structure, which is unlikely to be repaired until a major refurb in the future."

Here is what the Yeti looks like in A-mode:

Here is the less scary B-mode:

And this is C-mode, which thankfully they have not had to use:

Here is a ride video (you see the yeti for a few frames at 3:13):

Here is a slow motion look at just the Yeti part of the video:

Top Banana

On A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Dana Snyder Dana says that one of  his favorite audition songs is Top Banana.

Ken mentions the following exchange from the song:

-They got to know the joke about the farmer’s daughter.
-Then take it in the kisser with the soda water!

Here is Phil Silvers performing the song in the film version of the musical:

Here is Milton Berle perfoming the song with Fozzie Bear on The Muppet Show:

The Burger King at PHX airport

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #180: Sheer Mac Attack Dana mentions that he eats at the Burger King at the Phoenix airport when he passes through it.

I found a picture of it:

Yep. That's all I got. Move along.

James Hong

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #180: Sheer Mac Attack features talk of James Hong.

From WIKI:
James Hong (traditional Chinese: 吳漢章, Wú Hànzhāng; born February 22, 1929) is an American actor and former president of the Association of Asian/Pacific American Artists (AAPAA). A prolific acting veteran, Hong's career spans over 50 years and includes more than 350 roles in film, television, and video games.

James, like Dana, was a guest at  Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo.

Ken mentions seeing James Hong recently in Big Trouble in Little China. He said the film "held up" and "sounded great" on BluRay.

Oscar Fish

On A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Dana Snyder Ken mentions his "Oscar fish". Dana doesn't know what one is.

From wiki:
Astronotus ocellatus is a species of fish from the cichlid family known under a variety of common names, including oscar, tiger oscar, velvet cichlid, or marble cichlid. In South America, where the species naturally resides, A. ocellatus specimens are often found for sale as a food fish in the local markets. The fish can also be found in other areas, including China, Australia, and the United States. Although its slow growth limits its potential for aquaculture, it is considered a popular aquarium fish.

Oscars are not "related" to Piranah.

Oscars are part of the Cichlid family that contains others species like Jack Depseys and Angelfish.

Piranah are part of the Characidae family and that group contains species like Neon Tetras and Silver Dollars.

Plumey's Oscar died in a bucket and, since he was too big to flush, was buried in a motel parking lot.

The Big N Tasty & McDLT

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #180: Sheer Mac Attack Dana and Ken talk a whole lot about McDonalds.

It really makes you want to eat some McDonalds. If you want to cut calories, stay in, cook your own burger and stare at Morgan Spurlock's mustache:

Or watch a commercial for the McDLT starring a young Jason Alexander:

Here is a new foreign commercial for the Big N Tasty with actress Sophia Vergara:

Alright, you resisted long enough. Gas up the car and get a Big Mac and toss out that middle bun. Plumey will be proud.

Flintstones Bedrock City in Williams, Arizona

On A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Dana Snyder Dana mentions that he once stopped at Flintstones Bedrock City in Williams, Arizona.

Opened in 1972, Flintstones Bedrock City is a small park just outside Flagstaff, AZ.

Dana mentions the brontosaurus slide:

The park also features many Bedrock buildings which children can walk inside of as well as a snack bar and gift shop.

Check 'em out on Facebook.

William E. Snyder Elementary School

On A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Dana Snyder Dana mentions that there is an elementary named in his dad's honor:

Here is Mr. Snyder's bio from the school's website:

Snyder ES opened in 2001. It was named after local architect, Bill Snyder.
Mr. Snyder is known for leading pro-bono projects, specifically projects that involve children. Having been touched by the Haitian earthquake of January 12, 2010, Bill was compelled to do something.  This led to his most recent undertaking.  He joined an assessment and design team working in conjunction with Schools of the Children of the World.  The team traveled as a part of a 10-person team making 2 separate trips to Haiti to evaluate the damage and begin planning efforts for the construction of 11 new schools in Leogane, Haiti.  Bill was tasked with heading up the planning and design of one of the schools, Bongnotte, which is now under construction.
Bill is a proud grandparent of two.  His granddaughter, Maya is 4-years old and her little brother, Benjamin was born on September 13, 2011.
Bill is now retired from Tate Snyder Kimsey Architects.  He is a Vietnam vet and family man.  His free time is spent running (has run many marathons), sketching, playing golf and is a car enthusiast.
Mr. Snyder is well known around Snyder ES. He runs with the running club and does other special things to help Snyder's students be successful.
Along with Mr. Snyder, the staff and students of Snyder Elementary work hard to support one another as a learning community which values character as well as academics.

William E. Snyder Elementary School is located in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ron Wisniski

On A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Dana Snyder Dana mentions the great Ron Wisniski.

Ron has performed on stage with Dana several times.

Ron performs regularly on stages across the country. His next performance is:

Clive in SOMETHING’S AFOOT at
Goodspeed Opera House, East Haddam CT
October 5--December 9, 2012

Dana mentions Ron Wisniski's website RonWisniski.com.

Ron's website has a chronology section where you can see his head shots from over the years:

You can see it for yourself by clicking here.

They also talk about getting all of Dana's head shots and morphing them. I can only hope this happens one day, but for now, stare at this gif until it changes:

What's a blue steak?

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #180: Sheer Mac Attack Dana mentions that his friend Brian likes to order his steak "blue".

Here is some info from ColinMcNulty.com:

What is a Blue Steak?

If you think about the difference between well done and rare, well there is just as much difference between rare and blue. It’s way beyond Very Rare. I’ve seen “blue steak” variously described as: take a cow, rip off any horns, wipe it’s arse, and throw a match on it; or my personal favourite: steak so rare, a good vet could bring it back to life!

Don’t get me wrong, a blue steak is not Steak Tartare (which is completely raw), it is cooked though of course definitions vary as to what “cooked” means when it comes to a blue steak.

Here is a chart that may explain things, or at least make this article seem longer:

Here, also from from ColinMcNulty.com, is advice on how to cook a blue steak:

Get the best bit of steak you can: go for fillet steak if you can get it, or sirloin steak, or if you must rump steak.

However, also try to get the thickest cut possible.

If you can, leave it out of the fridge for a few hours before cooking. This is to bring the steak up to room temperature, which will help the middle become warm, considering the quick cooking time (2-3 minutes).

Salt and Pepper the steak to taste, I like a bit of sea salt and a lot of cracked black pepper corns. You can also add some herbs if you like, a sprinkling of rosemary is my favourite.

Heat some (extra virgin) olive oil in a large frying pan. Set the heat to HIGH, you want it HOT.

Pop in a small nob of butter, which should bubble immediately.

Now carefully place your soon to be blue steak in the frying pan. Try to leave it alone, don’t fuss over it. No stirring or prodding, no weighing it down or pressing, the occassional shake of the pan should be all that’s required to alleviate your worries that it might be sticking.

Make sure the heat is still on high.

If your steak is thin, after 1 minute, that side will be done so turn it over.

If your steak is thick, you might be inclined to stretch to 1.5 mins per side.

After the 2nd side is done, you should ensure that no part of the surface of the steak is still uncooked. If you have a particularly thick steak, it’s possible the sides aren’t cooked, so manipulate the steak to slowly roll it round on its side.

A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Dana Snyder

A Bit of a Chat with Ken Plume & Dana Snyder! I have wanted to hear this for so long! I have always assumed that Ken's freewheelin' interview style would make for a fun chat with Dana.

I have always felt that this would feel very different from a Ken PD Snydecast.

Here is the FRED description:

I’m Ken Plume, and soon you’ll be listening to “A Bit Of A Chat” with me, Ken Plume.

In this episode, I have a chat with actor Dana Snyder about theater, frozen Oscars, school days, nerves, and professional inebriation.

Hope you enjoy…

Plus, since we got 3 hours and 22 minutes of Dana and Ken today, let me put this up:

Restaurants Mentioned in Ken PD Snydecast 179 - PART 4

On Ken PD Snydecast 179: Butter Gravy the boys mention lots of restaurants.

Here are EVEN more of them:

The Highland Tap
Dana mentions that he hasn't been in this place for a while.

Known for fine steaks, this place has a cellar atmosphere.

Empire State South

Despite not being impressed by the TV chef who runs the place, Dana found this place INCREDIBLE.

This is Hugh Acheson of Top Chef  Masters:

I don't know how Dana could NOT be impressed by this guy! He's wearing a fake mustache as eyebrows!!

The restaurant was so good Dana went there two times in two days.

Paula Deen's The Lady and Sons Restaurant

Ken talks about wanting to go here and not eat.

They also discuss the "grillades" on the menu.

Here is the definition:
Grillades are a traditional New Orleans food generally served at breakfast or brunch with grits, and often referred to as grits and grillades. Recipes vary, but usually include beef, veal or pork; slow cooked with vegetables and served over grits.
