Damn Yankees in Arrow Rock, MO June 18-26

Dana Snyder will be performing at the Lyceum Theatre in Arrow Rock this summer in three different shows.

First is the musical comedy Damn Yankees from June 18th through June 26th.

Damn Yankees opened on Broadway in 1955 and is still a fresh fun show today. The longevity of the show is partially due to it's great story which borrows from the Faust legend.

Dana will be playing the team coach Benny Van Buren and the show is definitely a must see for anyone that can drive to Missouri.

For a taste of the story, check out this clip of Phil Silvers in a 1967 television version of the show:

A closer look: Duff energy drink

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #96: Banana Breath the boys talk about Duff energy drink.

You probably recognize the Duff name from that chick Hilary Duff.

Or The Simpsons. They use the name there, too:

According to the Wikipedia page (and whoooo boy... we know that stuff is always true) Simpsons' creator Matt Groening said he would never make actual Duff BEER so we get the energy drink.

You can buy it at the Universal Studios gift shop (the one near The Simpsons Ride.)

Both Ken and Dana talk about how much they like the taste.

You can buy the drink from Amazon... but it's about $8 a can.

Ken also mentions the other Simpsons energy drink, the Flaming Moe...

... and the Australian beer named Duff:

This poorly written paragraph appears on the Wikipedia page for Duff beer:
In the mid 1990s, the Lion Nathan brewery in Australia produced a beer called Duff. 20th Century Fox brought legal action against the company. The product was ordered to be pulled from store shelves and destroyed, because of the likely association in public mind between the Simpsons brand and characters and Lion Nathan's product, though the manufacturer did not use any Simpsons characters or the Simpsons Duff Beer design. The beer became a collectors' item in the process, with one case selling for US$13,000.

Video: Dan Aykryod

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #67: Sunny Side Down talks of celebrity maladies and deformities.

Rowan Atkinson has a stutter, Danny Glover has no toenails, Dudley Moore had a club foot...

Then Ken drops this bombshell:

Ken: Dan Aykroyd has webbed toes.
Dana: No he doesn't.
Ken: Yes he does.
Dana: He has webbed toes?
Ken: Uh huh.
Dana: If he does... that is... disgusting.

Well, he does.

Still, it's not the worst deformity one could have... remember this exchange (courtesy of MST3KINFO.COM) from the Manos episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000:

Joel: I mean there's got to be a ton of other exaggerated "physical attributes" that would be a whole lot scarier. Like, if I wanted to scare people, I'd have really huge forearms.
Tom: Well, ya kinda do. But what I'd do, see, get this, I'd have one big droopy pinky, and I'd drag it behind me.
Crow: What if you had one buttcheek that was way bigger than the other one? Couldn't stand it, huh?
Tom: My head: a canker, a big giant canker. Nothin' but.
Joel: I'd have one, really big flared nostril, and inside would be lots of red matted hair.
Crow: I'd have an ear that would cover me like a shroud, and a thumb the size of a juggling pin!
Joel: Yah!
Crow: ...but not on my hand.
Tom: Nipples. Many sizes, many shapes. Some on my back!
Crow: A tongue the size of a sleeping bag, and my fingers would fold the other way. Think about it.
Joel: On my face, everything normal except--no nose.
Crow: Nothing?
Joel: Nope, not even holes. Think how disturbing that would be, ahh!

You can find that exchange at around 7 minutes into this clip:

Things on Ken's Nerdy Shelves

The other day we took a look at Ken's "nerdy shelves" and we sat in awe of the Geektopia that was his office.

Let's take a closer look at some of these items:

A Futurama Resist the Permanent Career Implant Chip poster.
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE YOUR OWN DEAD-END JOB!

Gilligan and Skipper figures from the Playskool Gilligans Island Floating Toy Set.
This was a toy based on one of the two Gilligan's Island spin off toons.

Since we are on the subject...

Every single episode of Gilligan's Island! Season 1 (the black and white season) and season 2 & 3.

The license plate from Back to the Future's DMC Delorean time machine.

Kap'n Alphabet Cereal! You may recall Gonzo eating this cereal in Muppets from space... and it spoke to him.

Ken's Nerdy shelves are truly something to behold. He could charge admission.

a second listen: KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #69: One Fish Two Fish

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #166: What’s New Wit You featured an abridged discussion of the glassbottom boat tour that Ken and Dana took in 2008.

The trip was explained in much greater detail in KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #69: One Fish Two Fish.

The show is one of the funniest episodes of the Ken P. D. Snydecast and deserves a second listen.

Here is a passage from the show where Dana explains the concept of a marine toilet:

"Let me explain what a marine toilet is. That means… ok imagine you have to take- OK gang, imagine you gotta take a poop. So you take the poop in the marine toilet. But guess what… you wipe your little buttocks with paper or whatever you wanna wipe it with, but none of that stuff goes in the toilet. The only stuff that goes in the toilet is the stuff that comes out of your body. Because, guess what, back to the sea."

Then Dana offers up the following hypothesis:

"Had they put the marine toilet in the front of the (glassbottom) boat and as we're driving out there you see this big fat lady go in and sit down and then (we look down) and 'what's that! Oh god!'"

The story tells about the horrors of the sea and the importance of Dramamine.

The episode also includes a visit to a fan named Jasmine's website (that site doesn't seem to exist anymore) and read her review of the Snydecast (which is on the web here.)

To read some things Jasmine has written since 2008 click here.

The show then spends a bit of time talking about Whatnot Muppets.

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #69: One Fish Two Fish is a great episode and you should bring it back for your next multi-task session.

VIDEO: Pachinko Commercials.

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #20: Pachinko Fever the boys spend most of the podcast talking about pachinko!

As exciting as the Pachinko machines are, the commercials are even more fun.

Take a look at this crazy dancing guy in this commercial:

This one also has singing and dancing... but fortunately more clothes:

More dancing, this one featuring a John Travolta impersonator:

Here is a super-silly Matrix pachinko spot:

Finally, Nic Cage has done a bunch of commercials for pachinko. Watch as he sings about pachinko, turns triplets into pachinko and comes face to face with human-pachinko ball hybrids:

VIDEO: Joe Vitrella interviews Dana Snyder at Spooky Empire 2008

Here is a great video of Dana hamming it up to an epic degree in a 2008 interview.
You will laugh yourself silly with this one. Mr. Snyder (not Schneider, BTW) is in rare form in this clip.

Classic, classic stuff.

a second listen: KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #99: Mailbag Special

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #99: Mailbag Special is a blast.

It starts off with one of the greatest countdown's of all time. Seriously.

Early on you get the fantastic "mail song" and then Ken and Dana bicker about an email from a listener named Sam. Then they bicker about the email service in general.

Later, the conversation turns to movies and Dana mentions that Gary Anthony Williams was in front of him in the theater when he saw Up.

Dana says Gary had his kid with him so I can only hope it was the Pixar film Up and not the Russ Meyer sex comedy Up.

One of the emails mentions "Who's Your Whackadoo", the game show that Dana and Ken created in the previous episode KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #98: Timothy’s Circus of Crime.

The episode features some great letters and Plumey doing a vast away of wacky voices. What more could you want?

KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #99: Mailbag Special is definitely worth another listen.

a closer look: The Live Three Stooges Show at MGM Grand Adventures

On KEN P.D. SNYDECAST #141: Marathon Men Dana talks of seeing the Live Three Stooges Show at MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park in Las Vegas.

Dana mentioned that the show starred Moe Howard's grandson, Jeffrey Scott, and featured piped in sound effects.

He said the show he saw was a reenactment of the 1946 Three Stooges short A Bird in the Head.

In the short Moe, Larry and Curly play wallpaper hangers that end up involved with a mad scientist who wants to transplant Curly's brain into a gorilla.

Jeffery Scott, a successful writer and grandson of Moe, produced the show and starred as Moe in the Magic Screen Theater.

The theme park was adjacent to the MGM Grand Hotel and was open from 1993 to 2000.

The original Three Stooges short A Bird in the Head is on youtube in two parts:

Shepherd's pie with meat

The latest Ken P.D. Snydecast #172: ButterBore includes some talk about food (surprised?) and a Shepherd's pie that Ken had at Three Broomstick's in Universal Studios' Islands of Adventure:

There was a little talk about if true Shepherd's pie does have meat... I cant find a definitive answer.

But I did find a recipe for shepherd's pie WITH meat that we can all cook tonight.

Easy Shepherd's Pie Recipe
Prep time: 10 minutes cook time: 50 minutes
INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 lbs ground round beef
1 onion chopped
1-2 cups vegetables - chopped carrots, corn, peas
1 1/2 - 2 lbs potatoes (3 big ones)
8 tablespoons butter (1 stick)
1/2 cup beef broth
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt, pepper, other seasonings of choice
METHOD
1 Peel and quarter potatoes, boil in salted water until tender (about 20 minutes).
2 While the potatoes are cooking, melt 4 Tablespoons butter (1/2 a stick) in large frying pan.

3 Sauté onions in butter until tender over medium heat (10 mins). If you are adding vegetables, add them according to cooking time. Put any carrots in with the onions. Add corn or peas either at the end of the cooking of the onions, or after the meat has initially cooked.

4 Add ground beef and sauté until no longer pink. Add salt and pepper. Add Worcestershire sauce. Add half a cup of beef broth and cook, uncovered, over low heat for 10 minutes, adding more beef broth as necessary to keep moist.

5 Mash potatoes in bowl with remainder of butter, season to taste.

6 Place beef and onions in baking dish. Distribute mashed potatoes on top. Rough up with a fork so that there are peaks that will brown nicely. You can use the fork to make some designs in the potatoes as well.
7 Cook in 400 degree oven until bubbling and brown (about 30 minutes). Broil for last few minutes if necessary to brown.
Yield: Serves four.

You can find this recipe and many others here.
